The snail’s shell, the birdhouse, the clam shell, the hut, the box, the outlet, the cellar, and the attic are all considered spaces of home by the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard. In his book The Poetics of Space, he refers to them as “happy places” because they evoke a deep sense of familiarity and security. Feeling at home is not so much about a specific house, dwelling, or place to sleep, but about belonging to a particular place, person, or cultural space. In Bachelard’s terms, a house is a collection of images.
“A sort of attraction for images concentrates them about the house. Transcending our memories of all the houses in which we have found shelter, above and beyond all the houses we have dreamed we lived in, can we isolate an intimate, concrete essence that would be a justification of the uncommon value of all of our images of protected intimacy?”
The Uncertain Domesticities exhibition seeks to trace the many layers of the theme of home, examining its evolving meanings over the past few decades.
